MUSIC THEORY RESOURCES
NOTE: None of the tutorials or channels I list in this box are beginner-friendly; you'll need to know music theory to understand them :P
I find David Bennett's tutorials on chord progression and time signatures very helpful when you want to construct complex melodies. His videos on modes are also pretty useful for understanding how they work and how they make you feel. I'd recommend these videos:
- 1 Chord Progression, 5 Levels of Complexity
- Major isn't happy, Minor isn't sad
- Every possible Chord Symbol explained
Cadence Hira has wonderful analysis videos on the soundtracks of video games and indie shows. Her environments miniseries breaks down the production of different soundtracks that acompany certain environments (i.e. shops) and is a wonderful tool to guide you in exploring how to achieve certain aesthetics in music composition, with chord progression, harmony and production.
MUSICAL INSPIRATION
I collect all kinds of musical inspiration from artists I listen to: the funky, the powerful and the overstimulating.
I'm often inspired by fantracks of video game soundtracks and how they encapsulate the original feel of the OST they're based on whilst still sounding fresh and original. RundownSD (or simply just rundown) has a bunch of music based on the classical era of Roblox, which I think really captures that nostalgic, inherently scuffed yet goofy quality of old Roblox.
Of course, I still get inspired by video game OSTs instead of just fantracks. Some of my biggest inspirations include:
- Deltarune
- Block Tales
- Pizza Tower
- Outer Wilds (and its DLC)
Lastly, I take inspiration from electronic-based artists both old and new, including:
- Waterflame, ParagonX9 and Dimrain47 - for that nostalgic feel from fusing orchestra and techno together
- Frums, Oliver Buckland and Pilotredsun - for that harmonically complex feel from some wonderful production techniques
- bill wurtz - just 'cause
ROBLOX STUDIO PLUGINS
I'm not sure if anyone touring this website of mine would be as interested in Roblox gamedev as I am, but here are some of my go to plugins to use:
WEBSITE BUILDING RESOURCES
I use W3Schools' HTML, CSS and JavaScript resources for practically everything. Sometimes, I refer to MDN Web Docs for these three as well.
