OUTER WILDS
What are the Outer Wilds?
Outer Wilds is a sci-fi exploration game set in a miniature solar system known as "the Outer Wilds". You play as the Hatchling, a Hearthian (an amphibian four-eyed biped) and star astronaut of the miniscule forest planet known as Timber Hearth. From here, you can pilot a rickety little spaceship, freely roam through this incredible solar system, and choose where to explore in the several odd, fantastical and sometimes lethal worlds that make up the Outer Wilds.
However, all of the worlds connect to an ancient tale of a lost civilization known as the Nomai, a highly advanced spacefaring civilization who may have been up to more things in the solar system than you might think...
Your goal is to uncover the secrets that the Nomai have left behind with your fancy new gadget - the Nomai translator, which can reduce the complicated spirals of the Nomai language into intelligable language. Many of the records the Nomai have left behind give us a window into how they were as a civilization.
Besides the Nomai, if you have the Echoes of the Eye DLC, you can discover yet another ancient civilization far older than the Nomai, who took residence in the shadows of the void. This civilization is just as technologically capable as the Nomai, yet they practically left no trace of their existence behind. Perhaps they wanted to hide from something?
Why should you visit the Outer Wilds? (Spoiler free)
Practically every aspect of this game is perfect - the dev team behind Mobius Digital really knocked it out of the park! (or planet, in this case) From the beautiful graphics, awe-striking landmarks to visit, interesting puzzles to solve, varied characters and world building, to the story and life-changing narrative, and the ethereal soundtrack to tie it all together, this game is perfect for anyone who wants to appreciate the fragile yet persistent qualities of the universe.
In order not to spoil the delicately stitched-together surprises woven in the gameplay, I HIGHLY recommend you play this game completely blind - After all, a book loses its twist once you know how it all plays out...
